That's me n' my business coach, Heather.

The pic inspired the email. I just love that this is what it looks like to hang with my business coach.
Both of us are such pros at being ourselves in our businesses.

It got me thinking about how often we hear the ol' “be yourself” advice in business and how unhelpfully vague that is.

So I made a list of 7 specific ways to actually practice being you in your business.

For me, the ones that come easiest are 1, 3, 4, 6, 7.

No. 2 is fairly new to me and it’s changed everything. No. 5 has been a work in progress as I unlearn people pleasing in business.
Working with Heather has helped a ton in both areas.

Onto the list...

  1. Say the quiet parts out loud.
    If you think something in your industry is overhyped, ineffective, or harmful…don’t shy away from talking about it in your content.
  2. Design your offerings around how you do your best work.
    Not how other people package theirs. This is what took me from being resentful of my business to feeling supported by it.
  3. Use marketing language that feels natural to you.
    Try writing your copy and content the same way you’d text your best friend. It’ll feel “wrong” at first. But once you notice that you write faster, the process is more enjoyable than trying to “write like a professional”, and your messages tend to resonate more…there’s no turning back.
  4. Do marketing in a way that aligns with your strengths as much as possible.
    If you love being on camera, post videos. If you love writing, go with text-only formats. If you love yapping, get your podcast going.
  5. Set boundaries that reflect your capacity.
    Availability, access, turnaround times, communication—make sure they’re sustainable for you and not just what’s convenient for your customers.
  6. Don’t just share the wins.
    Share the failed experiments, the lessons learned, the hard parts, the unknowns. This will feel like such a risk but people really appreciate and trust this level of realness.
    Note: I don't recommend sharing things you haven't processed yet or things that feel too tender/private for the public eye.
  7. Make business decisions based on your values, not just what makes you money.
    Revenue matters, obviously. But how you earn it matters, too. Unless you don’t care about that…in which case, don’t be yourself. 🤪
